Trilobites were an extremely successful type of paleozoic marine arthropod (the Arthropoda includes arachnids, crustaceans, insects and other related forms) with over 1500 genera and 4000 species recognized. Trilobite fossils first appear in early Cambrian (570 ma) strata and may have first evolved 100 million years before that. Trilobites mysteriously disappeared at the end of the Permian period (245 ma). The trilobites above were prepared by Steven Anderson and photographed by Stu.
